Supply Chain\u00a0 – Beware the trip hazard in your business<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite all of the gloom, doom and bickering, over the Free Trade Deal negotiations, a deal is still possible.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I would caution, however, that there is a general consensus of opinion among some businesses that, if there is a trade deal, we won\u2019t have to worry about customs declarations and all of the accompanying paperwork.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Customs Declarations\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

This is NOT the case. The Free Trade Agreement is about tariffs not customs declarations.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I cannot impress upon you enough how important it is, if you export to or import from the EU for you to have a complete awareness and understanding of the administrative tasks that you will need to complete.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Incoterms\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

This applies to not just your export\/import personnel but also, senior management, the negotiating team (ensuring correct Incoterms are in place), the legal team, insurance teams, finance department.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Supply Chain\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

And, of course, your supply chain. Don\u2019t let them be the trip hazard in your business. Make sure they\u2019ve got all their ducks in a row too!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Commodity codes\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

As an example, commodity codes that you use on the documentation must be accurate.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It has become the habit of some traders when dealing with the EU to just use the first commodity code on the list when dealing with Europe.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>You may be interested to know that the \u201cdefault\u201d commodity code that has been used means that the UK has shipped more pure-bred stallions than have ever actually existed in the UK!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Customs brokers<\/span><\/h3>\n

And whilst you may have customs brokers, freight forwarders and shipping agents who will do all they can to assist you, the responsibility for correct and timely paperwork is yours, the trader.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>The UK is currently trying to hire and train 50,000 customs brokers to deal with the shortfall.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Government Training Grant<\/span><\/h3>\n

T<\/span>he government has provided a\u00a0<\/span>\u00a3<\/span>50<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>million\u00a0<\/span>grant<\/span>\u00a0for\u00a0<\/span>export\/import\u00a0<\/span>training, to\u00a0<\/span>enable<\/span>\u00a0companies to learn about customs<\/span>\u00a0paperwork.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Some<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>of that fund will also pay for\u00a0<\/span>you<\/span>\u00a0to employ new staff\u00a0<\/span>specifically to handle exports and imports.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>In addition, you can<\/span>\u00a0also claim for any new\u00a0<\/span>IT<\/span>\u00a0systems that\u00a0<\/span>you\u00a0<\/span>may need to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>cover the new declarations<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>This means that any training costs can be recovered.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
